Pineapple and Mango in the Clean Fifteen

Wed 30th May, 2012 - 8:01am by Emma Cockrell

The flesh of pineapple and mango is protected from pesticide residue by the thick skin, making these fruits a good choice if you can’t buy organic.  You do want to give them a good rinse to keep the flesh clean while cutting however.

These fruits are not suitable for most people who are following Nutritionhelp recommendations, but they make tasty and easy desserts and treats if you are feeding family or friends. As an alternative to the usual fruit salad , I recently served at a dinner party a selection of tropical fruits, including pineapple and mango. I thinly sliced and ‘fanned’ them out over half of a dinner plate.  On the other half I placed a spoonful of thick natural yoghurt. Over the whole plate I then sprinkled some finely grated organic orange rind and a little cinnamon. I was amazed at how something so simple drew so many complementary comments! Simple ideas like this can be helpful if you are entertaining but  avoiding fruit, sugar and desserts yourself.

As an alternative to buying sugary ice’s for the children, try mashing mango, pushing it into an ice-lolly mould and freezing.
