Gut Ecology

Tue 25th Sep, 2012 - 9:08am by Emma Cockrell

As many of our Nutritionhelp clients will know, encouraging healthy gut ecology is a main factor in our nutritional programmes. Why is this so important? Nutritionhelp founder, Erica White, experienced first hand the importance of ensuring that the friendly bacteria in the gut were kept at optimal levels, and unhelpful bacteria, yeasts and pathogens kept to a minimum, in ensuring that optimum health is supported. If those bugs get out of balance then health may be affected in all manner of ways.  Erica’s books talk extensively about the impact of gut ecology on health.

Beat Candida Cookbook

Erica White’s Beat Candida Cookbook comprehensively discusses the role that yeast overgrowth, and in particular Candida albicans, might have in affecting not only gut health, but skin, joints, allergies, depression, headaches etc. Her Beat Fatigue Handbook demonstrates the role gut ecology may play in affecting Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

For well over 20 years Erica White, first privately and now through Nutritionhelp, has been working to support the health of thousands of clients by striving to ensure that gut ecology – that fine ratio of friendly and unfriendly bacteria – is in correct balance. Interestingly, this is now being acknowledged by an increasing number of practitioners, with a rising number of  research papers, articles, books, and seminars being written on the subject. Tomorrow, and for the next couple of days, I will post some thoughts by American Pharmacist Suzy Cohen on the importance of friendly bacteria (probiotics), much of which is simply reiterating what Erica has been saying for years! However, as important as introducing friendly bacteria into the diet is, a yeast overgrowth will also need the other three factors of Erica’s Four-Point-Plan to ensure gut ecology is fully supported:

1. A diet to starve yeast in the body

2. A personal nutritional supplement programme to support the immune system and other body systems

3. Nutritional supplements to provide friendly bacteria

4. Nutritional Supplements to address the yeast.
