Treats For Christmas – Coconut Bites

Fri 7th Dec, 2018 - 12:30pm by Emma Cockrell

Ape Crunchy Coconut Bites

If you haven’t already come across the Ape crunchy Coconut Bites, now would be a good time to check your supermarket or whole-food shop shelves. I found these in the ‘Free From’ aisle of a local supermarket. When everyone around is snacking on sweet-treats it is nice to have something to go to that doesn’t compromise all your hard work in supporting health nutritionally.

Coconut Bites Ingredients

The natural Coconut Bites contain coconut, tapioca starch and rock salt. A quick over-view of these ingredients shows that this is a snack that can be enjoyed by those on the Nutritionhelp anti-Candida diet:

  • Coconut

    • A main staple in the diet for many living in the tropics around the world, coconut flesh is high in saturated fats.
    • One of these fats is Lauric acid, which as been found to encourage helpful HDL cholesterol levels in the blood
    • Coconut flesh contains important minerals such as calcium, iron, manganese, magnesium and zinc
    • Coconut also contains potassium, which helps to balance sodium levels in the body
  • Tapioca Starch

    • Research shows that this starch is a resistant starch, meaning that it doesn’t impact onto blood sugar levels.
    • Resistant starch passes through the body in a similar way to fibre.
    • Resistant starch provides a food source for beneficial bacteria
  • Rock salt

    • Because salt can have a stimulating effect on the body, Nutritionhelp generally recommends that sodium from cheap table salt should be kept low in the diet.
    • With only 0.02g of salt in a 30g pack, Coconut bites fall into a low salt category

Flavours and Cost

A 30g sachet contains about 15 round bite-size snacks, and costs £1.49. This may not be the cheapest way of having an anti-candida-diet-friendly munch, but the fact it can be bought off-the-shelf can be incredibly helpful.

Ape Coconut Bites are available in 3 ‘flavours’

  • Natural – with the ingredients listed above
  • With added sesame seeds or added chia seeds

So if you get the ‘munchies’ while everyone is tucking into sugar-laden snacks, reach for a pack of Coconut Bites. The high level of healthy fat makes these rich and satisfying, so you may find that just two of three of the bites are sufficient to satisfy you. On the other hand, you may find it hard to put the packet down…!
